Campaign Against The New York Safe Games Act of 2007

    Letter in Opposition

Recently the New York State legislature passed part of a bill that we feel could be harmful to the game development business in New York and threatens free speech generally. The more egregious parts of the bill are still under consideration. We wrote this letter in opposition and are hoping you will consider joining us by adding your logo to the bottom of the letter. The proposed New York State video game bill makes it a felony to disseminate video games containing “depraved violence” and/or “indecent images.” The bill defines these terms very broadly and leaves it up to the ultimate retailer to determine whether or not a particular game meets the definition. If the retailer makes the wrong choice, they could face criminal charges. Our memo explains why such a law, if enacted, is unconstitutional and could negatively affect not only video game sales, but the game development and creative industries in New York generally. If you’d like to add your logo in support, email us here.
